⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
Chhaava (2025) Unlike Bollywood they’re into historical dramas but prefer something or other. With Laxman Utekar wielding the camera, in a kind of context of lesser-known gems, and Vicky Kaushal in what is something of a career-definer, makes for a headlong plunge into Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s life and struggles. The scale, the action, the emotional heft make it worth watching, but does it really get the job done? Let’s dive in.
Chhaava Review!
The Story: A Warrior’s Journey
Chhaava is the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of the legendary Shivaji Maharaj. The movie shows his strength, military genius and his unrelenting fight against the Mughals. While creative liberties have been taken (or technology changed a few things), ultimately fits a cinematic telling more than, say, the history altering. While it does so without being too drawn out, it at times could have explored a bit more of his inner turmoil.
A Standout Scene: The Battle of Sangameshwar
Chhaava has many intense and well-shot memorable sequences, but the Battle of Sangameshwar is one of those that stays long after the movie is over. Sambhaji Maharaj who leads a handful of Maratha soldiers and takes on thousands of Mughal forces is a fiery Vicky Kaushal with his arms up against a huge horde.
The raw emotion at play, the tactical posturing, the feral fighting — all of it is breathtakingly choreographed. Its cinematography dwells on clashing swords and shouting warriors, inviting the viewer to consider the stakes of war. It is in this moment that Kaushal proves why he was the right person for the part.
Vicky Kaushal: A Powerhouse Performance
The actor Vicky Kaushal shows exceptional talent in his work. Throughout the movie Vicky Kaushal portrays Sambhaji Maharaj with dramatic intensity showing both powerful battle traits and inner exposed moments. The speech which Sambhaji gives to his warriors before their last battle stands as an undoubted masterpiece that sends chills throughout viewers.
Supporting Cast of Chhaava
- Rashmika Mandanna (Yesubai): Rashmika Mandanna portrays the perfect combination of elegance and deep emotions as Yesubai through her portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife. Although more presence would have produced better results yet I still have no criticism for it.
- Akshaye Khanna (Aurangzeb): Akshaye Khanna delivers outstanding work as Aurangzeb that enhances the political elements of the tale. Viewers find the most exciting dialogues in the film unfold between Kaushal and the other main characters.
Direction & Cinematography: A Visual Treat
Through his creative approach Laxman Utekar enhances the storytelling narrative. Ayananka Bose delivers visually pleasing cinematographic frames while costume designers along with the production design transport viewers into the past era. Intimate war scenes provide realism while the first part of the film meanders extensively before the action-packed second segment.
Music & Background Score: A.R. Rahman’s Magic
The soundtrack which A.R. Rahman composed shows brilliance. The war anthems serve to generate anger while gentle music enhances the dramatic effect of each scene. Two songs in the score feel excessive because they create interruptions to the ongoing musical rhythm.
Hits & Misses of Chhaava
What Works:
- The performance of Vicky Kaushal in his role is both truthful and deep and he has executed the character perfectly.
- The battle moments of the film are beautifully recorded and staged.
- The movie strikes emotional chords as it unfolds historical accounts.
- The background music from A.R. Rahman brings impactful messages to the audience.
What Could Have Been Better:
- The movie shows inconsistent pacing because the first fifty percent needs a tighter structure.
- Rashmika Mandanna needed more time to appear in the film.
Box Office & Audience Reception
The opening of Chhaava at the box office delivered ₹13.18 crore which proved to be the biggest start-up of any Bollywood film throughout the year 2025. Several viewers commend Kaushal’s acting abilities as well as the intense emotional content in the movie yet there are those who believe it could have reached even deeper emotional levels.
Final Verdict: A Must-Watch for Historical Drama Fans
If you love historical epics, the Chhaava is definitely one of the best watches. The film brings to focus the story of a warrior who has been mostly eclipsed by history, going about it with stunning imagery and memorable performances. Though not entirely flawless, Chhaava accomplished a cinematic homage to an unnoticed hero.
